  • In July 2005 my older brother Steven, then 27 years old, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in his sleep. To say it was devastating would be an underestimation. The pain and grief tore through the family like nothing we’d ever experienced and left a gaping hole. I’d never seen my mother so broken and so in pain. I had no idea what to do. As the now eldest of my siblings, I tried to take care of everyone and everything. Ruth was by our side as soon as she heard and was not deterred or unnerved in the face of such outpouring of grief. She never wavered and supported us all both practically and emotionally. She would always check in with me and ensure I knew she was there, and I wasn’t alone; for that I will always be eternally grateful to her.
